So, today is Monday. I was planning this update to go out yesterday, but life was more important. I’m going to attempt to be more organised this week.
Hopefully you all follow me on Instagram. There, and on my facebook page, you will find (almost) daily updates of how I am going with my training, thoughts on what I’m doing, what is working and what isn’t. Every Sunday I will update for the week, but this update is going to cover the last few months…..cos I’m just getting in the updating habit now, and this journey started a few months ago!

August until last week!
In August I had surgery. I had a six week recovery time, which turned into a little longer but its all good. During those six weeks, I was walking every day. First it started with a few laps once or twice a day around the deck. Then I made it to the letterbox, then to the corner. I was achieving. (The corner is a mere 50 metres from my front gate).
The day I made it over the road to my friends house was awesome. I’d been home from hospital about a week, so I was around about 2 weeks post surgery. That walk took me all of the afternoon to recover from.
A couple of weeks after this, after some constant walking to the corner and back, I felt fantastic. Still extremely sore and slow, but feeling good. I went around the block. Not by myself, cos that would just be silly. I got half way around and almost needed to be carried home. I made it but the next day did nothing. It was a mere walk around the block.
By this time, my facebook feed had introduced me to the New York Marathon! A random post that popped up one day. Now my mind was made up. I couldn’t walk around the block but I was going to run the New York Marathon! Anyway, that made me all the more determined to get out, every day, and walk the streets. I did wait until my 8 week check up post-surgery before I added in any running, although I never mentioned to my surgeon what I was contemplating.
I worked out that the block around my house is 1km. So, I started walking it, one day at a time, one lap at a time. I knew if I needed to get home quickly (bowel surgery does that to you sometimes) I could dash down the side streets and I’d be home. This gave me so much satisfaction. I could just walk around the block as many times as I needed to get the distance up. I’m not too worried about time at the moment, it’s all about being able to do the distance.
I was up to about 3km a day. It had taken me about 2-3 months to get this far. Achievement plus! That was when I went and entered the Saint Clair Half Marathon in May! Its for a good cause, raising money for Bowel Cancer NZ. Now I have a goal.
I started training a little harder, running a little more (although I’m not a natural runner, and never will be), adding in a few metres of running here and there. I reckon if I do a little bit extra every day, I’ll eventually get there! Maybe! Maybe not! But i’m determined. I know I can make the distance, after all it is only 21 times around my block.
Then, on Monday 20th November, I broke my 5km challenge! This distance had eluded me for so long. I had a mental block around this distance. I could never get that extra 200metres, or that extra 1km. Now I had done it!

Monday 20 November was a milestone day for me. I broke the 5km hoo doo. I was so elated. So happy. You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face that day.

So that was Monday. Lately on a Tuesday morning I’ve been having a pilates session with my physio. She has been taking me through exercises to help strengthen my core, which will in turn help with my running. After our last session I will be keeping this up on a Tuesday, a pilates session at home. I will add exercises into my daily routine, but will do a full hour on Tuesdays as an alternative to running.
Wednesday I didn’t head out, can’t remember the reason why! Thursday I did another 5km. Such exhilaration. Knowing I can now consistently achieve that distance. Now to make it faster and more running than walking.
Friday I chickened out as it was raining. Well, not raining raining but it was that awful light misty rain that is just plain annoying. I will overcome this mindset oneday, but for now, I don’t like heading out in the rain.
Saturday I should have gone for a walk to stretch the muscles out from a night of dancing but instead I chose to sleep in slightly and have an easy day. Oh well. I did head out for a brief jaunt on Sunday. It was hard, but I made myself.
